It’s time to begin your home decluttering activity.

As we move into early spring, the weather in South Florida has been absolutely idyllic. Cool temperatures, offshore breezes, and thankfully no hurricanes, fires, or storms to speak of.

As we march into spring, consider opening up those windows and letting fresh air fill your lungs, your living room, and every corner of your home.

Simply pulling up closed shades and opening windows lets new energy flow into your space. Fresh air replaces stale indoor air, sunlight warms your home, and the natural circulation creates a healthier and more peaceful environment.

Let the cool breezes circulate through your home while sunshine fills the rooms with warmth and light.

Some people also enjoy a spiritual cleansing ritual during spring. A simple sage cleansing or a moment of prayer can bring a sense of renewal, positivity, and well-being to your living environment.

Eliminate Toxic Air Fresheners

Once we emerge from winter, many people begin their spring cleaning routines. But spring cleaning does not mean buying more air fresheners like Febreze or chemical odor eliminators.

In fact, the healthier approach is to eliminate toxic fumes from your home.

Many commercial air fresheners contain synthetic fragrances and chemicals that can cause headaches, respiratory irritation, and other health concerns for both people and pets.

Instead of filling your home with artificial fragrances, consider healthier alternatives:

  • Essential oil diffusers
  • Fresh flowers
  • Pine needles
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Natural ventilation

Another great addition to a healthier home is a quality air filter. These help remove dust, pollutants, and pet hair while improving overall air quality.

Start Your Decluttering With the S.M.A.R.T. Method

Once your home feels refreshed, it’s time to start clearing clutter.

I like to use what I call the S.M.A.R.T. System of Decluttering.

The “S” stands for Start Simply.

Starting simply means choosing a small, manageable area that is easy to tackle first. This builds momentum and makes the process feel less overwhelming.

For example:

  • A medicine cabinet
  • A nightstand
  • A bathroom counter
  • A small dresser surface

The Nightstand Reset

A great place to begin is your nightstand.

Remove everything from the surface. Clean it completely and create a fresh, clear space.

Then place back only what truly serves you:

  • A lamp
  • Glasses
  • Phone charger
  • A book
  • A clock

Everything else can go in a drawer or another organized space.

Clear surfaces instantly bring a sense of calm and order to a room.

The Clean Sweep Challenge

Dresser tops and counters tend to collect random items over time.

You might find:

  • Jewelry
  • Pens and pencils
  • Paperclips
  • Receipts
  • Loose socks
  • Items from purses or pockets

Take the Clean Sweep Challenge.

Remove everything from the dresser and start fresh. Once the surface is clean, deliberately place back only the items you truly want there.

For some people, that might be perfumes or a jewelry tray. For others it may be a simple decorative item.

Everything else can be organized inside drawers.

The S.M.A.R.T Decluttering Philosophy

My decluttering philosophy is simple:

  • S – Start Simply
  • M – Mindset
  • A – Action
  • R – Repurpose
  • T – Transformation

When you approach decluttering with this mindset, your home becomes more than just clean. It becomes calm, organized, and easier to live in.

Let Spring Energy Into Your Home

This month, keep it simple.

  • Open your windows
  • Let fresh air circulate
  • Allow more sunlight into your home
  • Replace chemical fragrances with natural alternatives
  • Start clearing simple surfaces

Small steps lead to big transformation.
