Top 10 Decluttering Hacks to Clear Clutter with Ease
Clutter. We all have it. It seems to find its way into our kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, cars, desks, and just about anywhere else there's an empty space waiting to be filled.
The good news? You don't have to clear your entire house in one day.
Here are the A+ Clutter Clearing Top 10 Hacks — tested and proven in homes across Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and South Florida. They're simple, practical, and effective. Some may take only a few minutes. Others may require a little more decision-making. But every one of them can move you closer to having a cleaner, clearer, and more comfortable home.
The question is: Which ones are you going to implement today?
10. Throw Away the Junk Mail
You know what it looks like… postcard advertising, coupon magazines, election flyers, promotional cards, and all the other stuff that magically appears in your mailbox.
Here's the rule: Read it or toss it, but do not save it.
Junk mail has a sneaky way of becoming clutter because we tell ourselves, "I'll look at that later." Then later becomes next week, and next week becomes a pile sitting on the kitchen counter.
Instead, make a decision when the mail comes into your home. Keep what actually requires your attention and get rid of what doesn't.
The easiest clutter to clear is the clutter you never allow to accumulate in the first place.
9. Wash Your Dishes and Clean Your Sink Daily
Nothing gets junkier looking faster than a sink filled with dirty dishes.
Wash them by hand or load the dishwasher, but either way, pledge to keep the sink empty each day before bedtime.
There is something very satisfying about walking into the kitchen in the morning and seeing an empty, clean sink instead of yesterday's dishes waiting for you.
This isn't about having a perfect kitchen. It's about developing one small daily habit that keeps clutter from gaining momentum.
Five or ten minutes tonight can save you from a much bigger job tomorrow.
8. Give Your Keys, Glasses and Everyday Items a Home
How much time do we waste looking for keys, glasses, phones, and other things we use every day?
Whether it's a shelf, a dish, a basket, a hanging hook rack, or something else, make a place near your front door where these everyday items belong.
Then — and this is the important part — make it a habit to put them there.
When frequently used items have a designated home, you don't have to think about where you left them. You know where they are.
Clutter clearing isn't only about throwing things away. It's also about creating simple systems that make your home easier to live in.
7. Clear Your Kitchen Countertops
You know you want to have a clean and clear home, so why not start with the kitchen counters?
Take a look at what is sitting there right now. Low-use appliances? Utensils? Notes? Mail? Things that somehow landed there three weeks ago?
In our almost 10 years of professional organizing in Palm Beach County, kitchen counters are a top area clients ask us to tackle first.
Clear the countertops and decide what really needs to stay.
What should you keep on the counter? Maybe the coffee maker, blender, or toaster oven — the things you actually use every day.
Everything else? Find it a home in a drawer, on a shelf, in the pantry, or underneath the counter.
You don't have to get rid of everything. You simply want to make sure the things occupying your valuable counter space have earned the right to be there.
6. Clear Your Bathroom Countertops
Same idea as the kitchen.
Remove everything from the bathroom counter. Yes, everything.
Clear and clean the surface. Then place only the items you need every day back onto the counter — toothbrush, toothpaste, hairdryer, soap products. Maybe a Q-tip holder is fine.
Do your best to keep the counter clear of all the extra cosmetics, brushes, combs, bottles, containers, and products that don't need to live there permanently.
Put those things into drawers, cabinets, or another designated storage area.
A clear bathroom counter makes the entire bathroom feel cleaner and calmer — and it also makes the surface a whole lot easier to actually clean.
5. Books, Books, Books
We have them. We love them. And most of the time, we rarely go back and read them a second time.
So why are we displaying them for years?
If you want more room in your home, go through your books and ask yourself which ones you genuinely want to keep.
Favorites? Absolutely. Books you refer to regularly? Keep them.
But books you finished years ago and haven't opened since? Maybe it's time to let someone else enjoy them.
Purge and donate the unneeded and unwanted titles. Someone else will surely appreciate them, and you'll create more breathing room in your own home.
4. Bedroom Do's and Don'ts
Other than one or two book titles, I don't believe the bedroom should house your library.
Why? Books are cerebral. We read to learn, think, and entertain ourselves. We're using our brains.
The bedroom, on the other hand, should be a place for emotion, tranquility, romance, and relaxation. Less thinking, more resting.
Take a look around your bedroom and think about whether the things in the room contribute to calm or simply create more visual clutter.
And while we love mirrors, I prefer not having them positioned where they reflect the bed and its occupants. In Las Vegas, sure. But in a home bedroom where you're trying to create serenity and calm? Not so much.
Your bedroom should feel like a place where you can shut down the day, not another storage room.
3. Match Those Storage Containers and Lids
We all have them.
Plastic, glass, or metal food storage containers. We have lids. We have bottoms. But somehow, they don't always seem to belong to each other!
This is a great little clutter-clearing project because you can tackle it relatively quickly.
Pull out your food storage containers and match every bottom with its proper lid. Once you see everything together, you'll know exactly what you actually have.
Anything that doesn't match? Consider donating what is usable or tossing out what isn't.
There's no reason to keep digging through six mystery lids every time you need to store last night's leftovers.
2. Clean Out Your Car
Clutter happens everywhere there's space!
Your car is your mobile home, and it deserves some TLC too.
Old wrappers, drink containers, papers, supplies, receipts, clothes, and all kinds of other things can accumulate before we even notice them.
Take 30 minutes a week and clear up the mess.
Remove the trash. Bring things that belong in the house back into the house. Put the items that need to stay in the car where they belong.
It's fast, easy, and effective. And getting into a clean car simply feels better than climbing into another pile of clutter before you've even left the driveway.
1. Old Papers
Perhaps the most time-consuming item on my Top 10.
Clearing old papers, shredding old documents, going through mail, magazines, and all the other paper that accumulates in our homes can become an ongoing assignment.
One of the best practices is simply not holding onto unnecessary paper in the first place.
Having a workable filing system and usable desk drawers is another good idea. Important documents need a designated home office so they aren't mixed together with papers that should have been discarded months ago.
And those old, tired magazines sitting in the bathroom magazine rack? Maybe it's time for them to go too.
Paper clutter requires some decision-making, some organizational tools, and, most importantly, a desire to get in front of the clutter instead of always being at its effect.
Start With One
That's my Top 10.
You don't have to do all ten today. Pick one. Clear the kitchen counter. Match the storage containers. Throw away the junk mail. Spend 30 minutes cleaning the car.
Then tomorrow, maybe you tackle another one.
Small decisions can add up to meaningful changes in how your home looks, feels, and functions.
And when the piles feel bigger than one person can handle — or you simply want lasting systems instead of temporary fixes — that's why I'm here.
