There is something wonderfully satisfying about climbing into a beautifully made bed at the end of a long day.

The sheets are smooth. The pillows are fluffed. The covers are waiting for you. And for just a moment, you can say to yourself, "I did it. I made it through another day."

Here's the secret: that feeling actually begins in the morning.

A Lesson in Order from Admiral McRaven

Admiral William H. McRaven, a retired four-star Navy SEAL admiral, made a simple bed into a powerful lesson about life. In his famous University of Texas commencement address, he explained that making your bed was the first task of every day during SEAL training. The bed had to be made properly — with attention to detail and discipline.

Why?

Because, as McRaven explained, "If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day." That little accomplishment creates a sense of pride and encourages you to tackle the next task, and the next.

I love this idea because, to me, making your bed isn't really about the bed.

It is about clutter clearing.

Clutter Is More Than What You Can See

And clutter isn't just the pile of clothes on the chair, the magazines beside the bed, or the things that somehow migrate onto your nightstand. Clutter can be visual, physical and mental.

When we wake up surrounded by unfinished business, the day can feel overwhelming before it even gets started.

Making the bed is a tiny declaration: "Today, I am starting fresh."

It takes only a few minutes. Pull up the sheets. Straighten the comforter. Fluff the pillows. Put yesterday's clothes where they belong instead of leaving them on the floor.

Suddenly, the bedroom looks calmer.

And when the bedroom is calmer, something inside us often feels calmer, too.

Order Creates Breathing Room for a Clutter-Free Bedroom

This is one of the principles I have learned through my work with A+ Clutter Clearing: order creates breathing room.

We don't necessarily need to organize our entire home every morning. Thank goodness! We simply need to create one small island of order.

The bed is a perfect place to begin because it is the largest object in most bedrooms. When it is made, the entire room immediately looks better.

But there is another piece of McRaven's wisdom that I find especially meaningful. He said that making the bed reinforces the fact that little things matter. If we can't do the little things right, he argued, we will have difficulty doing the big things right.

That is a powerful clutter-clearing philosophy. A cluttered life is rarely created in one afternoon. It usually happens one little thing at a time.

A shirt gets tossed over a chair. A piece of mail gets put on the counter "for later." A drawer becomes the place where everything goes. A closet gets one more shopping bag.

And eventually, the little things become a big thing.

Small Steps, Big Changes Toward a Clutter-Free Bedroom

The reverse is also true.

One little thing done well can begin a chain reaction.

Make the bed. Put away the clothes. Clear the nightstand. Take the coffee cup to the kitchen. Throw away the junk mail.

Five minutes later, you have accomplished something tangible — and perhaps more importantly, you have reminded yourself that you are capable of creating order.

And then comes my favorite part. At night, you get to undo it!

After a busy day, there is something almost luxurious about slipping between sheets that you intentionally prepared for yourself that morning.

That made bed becomes a gift from your morning self to your evening self.

Even if the day was difficult, you come home to something orderly, peaceful and welcoming.

McRaven made this very point: even after a miserable day, you can return to a bed that you made, and that small accomplishment can remind you that tomorrow can be better.

I think there is something beautiful about that.

It's Self-Care with a Little Backbone

Making your bed isn't military discipline for civilians.

It is self-care with a little backbone.

It says: I matter. My surroundings matter. The way I begin my day matters.

So, tomorrow morning, before reaching for your phone, try something different.

Make your bed.

Not because anyone is inspecting it. Not because the corners have to be perfect.

Make it because you are giving yourself your first success of the day.

And tonight, when you climb into that inviting, beautifully made bed, enjoy the reward.

You earned it.
