May You Have a Clutter Free Home,
Here's How to Get There…
That's right. You can start the process of eliminating clutter from your home and create a sanctuary in its place.
Here's how to implement the S.M.A.R.T. System I've created and shown to be an effective way to clear the clutter.
S — Start Simply
Before taking on the GARAGE or any other super cluttered space, consider starting simply. Try clearing out one drawer in your kitchen. A nightstand drawer, or just a bathroom counter top. In so doing, the process gets you moving in the right direction, builds confidence and momentum. So, start simply.
M — Mindset
You know the feeling of procrastination, indecision, and stagnation. It's not getting you to your goals. A healthier mindset to get you "in the mood" is recommended. Put on some good music you can enjoy while decluttering. Get yourself a fave beverage. And put on cozy clothes and wear protective closed-toed shoes. Now you've got a different vibe going, and you're ready to work the program.
A — Action
Start by preparing with 2 different garbage bags — black for discards (garbage), white for donations. Then select the drawer or counter to focus on.
If it's a countertop:
Step 1: Clear everything off the counter and wipe clean. Step 2: Be DELIBERATE about placing the items used DAILY on top — all else gets to find another drawer, shelf or cabinet. Step 3: Look at the difference you created. FEEL the sense of calm with a countertop free of distractions.
If it's a drawer:
Dump the contents out completely. Wipe clean. Then DELIBERATELY place only the essential items you need back in. All else finds a new home. Consider a drawer divider that helps secure different items in their own compartments — creating a much simpler system to "have everything in its place."
R — Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle
You'll find after taking on the first three steps that you have "extra stuff." This extra stuff can be reused in a different location, repurposed for another use, or recycled. Old clothes, for example, by donating to a charitable cause. Your decluttering process can actually help others — try the 3 Rs and you'll soon find yourself being philanthropic, helping others while creating more space in your home.
T — Transformation
That's right. Once you apply these techniques… your home soon appears (feels & smells) more desirable. Less things on the counters, a place for keys, wallets, spare change and shoes, a way to find items like scissors, a pen, a phone charger — you're on your way to TRANSFORMATION. For once you allow your home to breathe, to have the space to conduct and create a sanctuary, you'll feel better. More alive, less distracted and full of energy and ideas for better living.
You can do this. With a friend, on your own, with a child. If you get "stuck," I'm just a phone call away. For eight years now, I've been decluttering, organizing and designing space for people with TMS (too much stuff). I can help you get started, or take on the whole home.
