Happy Herald – From Clutter to Clarity – The Kitchen Pantry

2020
Last month, we covered essential tips for decluttering the kitchen. This month, we take on the kitchen pantry. Other than the fridge, we generally store our food, drinks, and kitchen stuff in our pantry area.
So, how’s your pantry organized? Just today, I took on a small closet pantry organizing assignment. You can tell a lot about someone’s health, diet, and snacking habits, by going through the pantry. An organized pantry is beneficial, uplifting and a relatively small area to declutter.
When we don’t have easy access to cans, bottles, and paper goods we tend to over shop, duplicate, and challenge ourselves for shelf space.
Here are my top 5 tips for you to re-organize and declutter your kitchen pantry.
- Set the tone for decluttering. Good lighting, play some music, enjoy some tea or coffee. Why not? It’s your space, your place and your project. Get comfortable – make it less a drudgery and more of a fun task!
- Empty the shelves completely. By emptying the shelves completely, you get a fresh start, clean shelves, and you are compelled to organize the contents, item by item, can by can, box by box and so on.
- Toss out expired items. Donate or toss out anything you no longer need, want or use.
- Be purposeful. Place items that go together, well, together. Cans go together, pasta goes together, water bottles, juices go together. Each shelf can be newly designated for items by category. Place the larger and taller items in back. Shorter, smaller items up front. You may want to adjust shelf heights while you’re at it.
- Check your pantry BEFORE you shop. I’m a vegetarian and I Iike to have garbanzo, black beans and other staples on hand. Too often, I used to buy these items only to see I had 2 or 3 cans already on the shelf. No problem, but if pantry space is at a premium, better to have an idea before you shop so you don’t overdue the duplication.
In conclusion, taking on your pantry is an act of love. Self – love. For when you are deliberate with your food choices and pantry item placement, you can appreciate “shopping” in your own home. Additionally, you are freeing yourself from confusion and time waste. You are inviting yourself, rather, to enjoy healthy food, food you choose, and the enjoyment of putting a meal together. Decluttering your kitchen pantry is a great place to start home organizing. Go for it!
