When TMS (Too Much Stuff) is Simply Overwhelming

With the beginning of the fall season, I am writing to invite you to look at your home environment and observe: Hopefully to make your home even MORE hospitable and loving.
- What’s working?
- What’s NOT working?
- What do you want to add?
We all have TMS on one level or another. Too Much Stuff! Sometimes we recognize our condition, other times, it just seems to creep up on us. Either way, having TMS can create a lot of problems. For one thing, TMS is a distraction. You see that pile of (fill in the blank) __________________ in the (fill in the blank) ________________ room? That pile of stuff is almost daring you to touch it, to mess with it, to sort it, or to dump it and get it out of your line of sight.
For example, you may have a spare bedroom or closet which, upon further inspection, is simply overflowing with things that have not been put away for quite a while. A distraction. Or… you have a kitchen pantry that hasn’t been handled in like forever and finding ingredients has become an exercise in futility. Wasting time, increasing frustration… and simply not efficient. Clearing the clutter can change your space and therefore your habits and patterns.
TMS can leave us with real and significant symptoms. Many clients I’ve worked with exhibited respiratory issues, eye irritations, headaches and general malaise that lessen or go away when we clear the clutter, remove obstacles, remove dust & dirt, and create amazing space for optimal well-being. That well-being shows up in a better client outlook, a chance to clean the slate and take control of the home environment. This new slate offers clarity and focus, while lowering the distraction factor. After a clutter clearing session, clients report they get that elusive promotion at work or they find a new love, or rekindle an old relationship, or sell their home at the highest levels and other note-worthy achievements. All from clearing the clutter? Never can tell, but there’s always a tangible benefit and in short order after decluttering!!
So, here’s your invitation. Take a tour of your home. Invite a friend or loved one to join you. See what areas “resonate” with you. What’s the favorite part of your home? What’s your least favorite place? Look at each space and see where the trouble spots are and ask yourself, “Why is this area cluttered, or congested, or just seemingly out of whack?” And then, when you are ready to take on a “trouble spot”, rely on your design ideas. Take on just one simple area to start. In this way, you’ll reach success which can inspire more motivation to clear the clutter in other “trouble spots.”
Whatever your clutter level, TMS is simply too much stuff. Take steps to reduce anxiety by reducing clutter off the counters, off the shelves, and in your cabinets, drawers and table tops.
