Your Relationship with Self Storage Facilities

  • The public storage sector is a whopping $38 billion industry in the United States today.
  • With over 44,000 storage facilities, that’s more than all the McDonald’s and Starbucks
  • stores combined!!
  • 9.4% of American households rent a self-storage unit at an average monthly cost of
  • $91.14. (Find stats on StorEDGE.com). That’s right, 1 out of 10 households pay over $1,000
  • a year to store their “stuff”. We simply have TMS* (Too Much Stuff).

Storing Boxes in Boxes in Giant Boxes

We are storing our boxes in boxes (the unit) in boxes (the building) dotting the country with publicly traded names like Public Storage, Extra Space Storage, CubeSmart, Life Storage, and U-Haul as the top five (based on 2017 annual revenue).
Here’s the rub. While many self-storage units are rented for a short period of time in mind, and with good reason, the majority of rentals continue to weigh down our monthly expenditures simply because we “look the other way”, or “haven’t gotten to the storage unit yet”, or “Fill in your excuse, here”.
We are in this together. It’s a problem that needs to be addressed, and address it we shall.

Stop Wasting Money and Start Saving!

With best intentions, we rent self-storage units for a short-term solution to an immediate pressing need. We may be moving, storing others’ furnishings, inheritance, and so forth.
I’m here to point out the fact that good money is being spent on storing items that may or may not offer you true value, joy or interest. It’s time to be mindful of this a questionable monthly expense.

Ask Yourself these three Questions:

1. When’s the last time I visited my self-storage unit?
2. How long have I been renting the unit?
3. How much longer am I willing to pay for this luxury?

If any answers surprise you or make you question the value of such a rental, GOOD!

Perhaps it’s time to clear the clutter, host an estate sale, auction, donate, toss or repurpose your possessions. At the very least, see what you’ve been paying for and downsize your storage stuff saving you hundreds of dollars annually.

Action steps, you can start on your own, TODAY!

  1. Visit your self-storage with a measuring tape, a camera, pen, and paper.
  2. Look at what you’ve got and start a list of:
    a. Stuff to donate
    b. Stuff to trash
    c. Stuff to repurpose in your home or office
  3. After this list is generated, bring in a helper, a truck, or just begin the process of moving your stuff to a better place.
  4. You may want to host an online sale, or consolidate into a smaller storage unit altogether (whoo hoo!)
  5. By taking on TMS* (too much stuff) YOUR stuff, you’ll see in a short time, that you can choose and create a more uncluttered, more organized lifestyle which has enormous benefits.

Benefits of Organizing Your Stuff

These benefits include financial savings, freedom, clarity, valuing your possessions, donations to charity (a feel-good function in helping others) and relief. You’ve finally taken on that pile of TMS* (too much stuff).
So, let’s get YOUR storage facility in order. Take control of TMS* and feel the
freedom of minimalizing possessions today!

Ask for Help

If you want, I can help. We can determine the best way to handle your “stuff”.
TMS* (Too Much Stuff) is zapping us of energy, time and money. That’s right, “excess baggage” weighs down our psyche, keeps us “stuck” and otherwise can be a burden. A barrier towards greater freedom, mobility and of course saving hundreds of dollars.
